About the Item
A spectacular antique French silvered bronze and rock crystal chandelier of large scale. The chandelier is constructed in a tiered pyramidal form, descending in multiple levels of candle arms. Each arm is fitted with a silvered bronze candle nozzle and drip pan, supporting white candle-form lights. The structure is richly decorated with rock crystal prisms in varied shapes, including pear drops, octagonal beads, diamond-form pendants, and faceted spheres, all suspended in chains and festoons across the frame. A central crystal ball drop at the base anchors the overall form.
The continuous arrangement features scrolling silvered bronze arms adorned with acanthus leaf ornament, issuing from a central cage-form body. Between the branches hang cascades of rock crystal beads, with large pendants alternating around the perimeter. The upper section is further enriched with rosettes and additional crystal drops, with garlands draped from one tier to the next. The chandelier features a uniform distribution of crystal drops, with both graduated and repeating patterns that emphasize its tiered silhouette.
French chandeliers of this type were produced during the 19th century, when silvered bronze mounts and rock crystal prisms were employed to create grand lighting fixtures for interiors of scale. The use of natural rock crystal, as opposed to cut glass, reflects the tradition of luxury materials associated with French neoclassical and later revival designs.
