About the Item
A spectacular and large antique Italian Neoclassical patinated bronze chandelier composed with a central sculptural figure and elaborate classical detailing. The chandelier is suspended from a fluted canopy issuing three bell-shaped elements, from which three rods descend to support the main body. At the center stands a nude male figure in classical contrapposto pose, positioned beside an ornamental tripod-form brazier decorated with standing winged female figures. The figure rests on a plinth that anchors the overall structure and creates the focal point of the chandelier.
The central circular body of the chandelier extends into two outward scrolling branches, each fitted with four candle-form electric lights, totaling eight. The candleholders are arranged symmetrically on round drip pans, while the scrolling branches display spiraled relief ornamentation. Between the branching arms, the central bronze drum is decorated with Neoclassical masks of female figures wearing braided hair, framed by wreaths and swags in relief. The lower section terminates in a rounded boss with a small pendant finial, completing the form with balanced weight.
This chandelier is crafted from patinated bronze, the dark surface treatment emphasizing the sculptural qualities of the central figure and relief ornament. The Neoclassical design is distinctly Italian in its execution, drawing inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity through the use of mythological and classical motifs. Such chandeliers were produced in Italy during the 19th century, reflecting the enduring interest in classical themes and the skill of Italian bronze workshops in rendering both prominent sculptural figures and detailed ornamental programs into functional lighting pieces.
