A Stunning Mid-Century Finnish Ceiling Light Attributed to Gunnel Nyman for Idman, 1940s–1950s
This exquisite ceiling fixture features a delicate glass shade enveloped by a soft silk (or silk-like) fabric, gracefully gathered with a yellowish beige glass and a polished brass knob. The interplay of light through the textured fabric and the translucent glass creates a warm, diffused glow, casting a cozy and inviting ambiance—perfect for enhancing intimate interiors, including rooms with lower ceilings.
The lamp accommodates three bulbs, ensuring ample illumination while maintaining its refined aesthetic. Though not catalogued, all components are by Idman, and the design aligns closely with the work of Gunnel Nyman. Given that many of her designs continued production into the 1950s—sometimes with slight modifications—it is highly plausible that this piece was either designed by her or custom-ordered from Idman based on her iconic 1940s creations. The flush mount base is stamped with Idman’s mark, confirming its authenticity.
Gunnel Nyman (1909–1948) was a pioneering Finnish designer and a leading figure in the modernist movement, celebrated for her innovative work in glass, metal, and furniture.
