About the Item

This is the Swedish brutalist 1970s sports cabin chandelier in wrought iron by the Swedish artist Erik Höglund and the blacksmith Lars Larsson. It comes in a circular, very rough shape. Eight bended candleholder arms are mounted with large rivets in the circular frame. The suspension consists of four iron rods that join in a link for the ceiling mount. The chandelier’s surface has a cracked black lacquered finish with rust-colored areas. Eight blown candleholders for tealights bring a beautiful brightness to the piece and to the room. It’s substantially a heavy piece. ____________________ Regarding Erik Höglund: Erik Höglund, born 1932, is one of Swedens best known glass artists. Right from the beginning and throughout his career he did things in his own way. He started to work in Boda Glasbruk 1953, in the age of 21. He is best known for his renewal of Swedish art glass. During the 20 years he worked at Boda Glasbruk, he made an indelible contribution to Swedish form and design through his colorful personality, his multifaceted artistry and experimenting with material combinations. In 1961, Erik Höglund persuaded the blacksmith Axel Strömgren to move his smithy from the small village of Kvilla to Boda. They collaborated for twelve years until Axel retired and was succeeded by Lars Larsson. After his time at Boda Glasbruk, Erik Höglund left in 1973 and continued working as a freelance artist with various glassworks, including Pukeberg, Lindshammar, and Strömbergshyttan, where he repeatedly created colorful, sculptural glass pieces. The collaboration between Erik Höglund and Lars Larsson continued even after Erik Höglund left Boda Glasbruk until Höglund passed away in 1998 at the age of 66. ____________________ Regarding Lars Larsson: Lars Larsson is born in 1950. In 1972, when the blacksmith Axel Strömgren at Boda Smide signaled that he planned to retire within a year, the company’s management handpicked the newly trained blacksmith Lars Larsson. As a result, Lars and Axel worked together at Boda Smide for one year. According to Lars Larsson, Axel Strömgren was perhaps one of the finest blacksmiths in the world at that point, dedicated to passing on his expertise. So, between 1972 and 1978, he came to work with several internationally renowned artists and designers, including Erik Höglund. During this period, he gained the experience required to earn his Master Craftsman’s Certificate in Artistic Blacksmithing, which he completed in 1975. After six years, Lars Larsson left the Boda workshop and established his own smithy in the small village Kopparfly. Since establishing his independent practice he has participated in more than a hundred exhibitions and completed an impressive number of public and ecclesiastical art commissions. Through Axel Strömgren, Lars mastered the challenging art of combining iron and brass. Examples of this craftsmanship can be seen in Katarina Church in Stockholm and Växjö Cathedral.
