About the Item

A rare Murano glass chandelier, designed by Tomaso Buzzi and produced by Venini in the 1930s, crafted in lattimo glass with golden inclusions for a pharmacy of the period. The Venetian island of Murano is the birthplace of those precious glass creations that for centuries have been admired as decorative and luxury objects throughout Europe and beyond. Some pieces, however, by chance remained anchored to their place of origin, spending their entire existence in the same setting. This Murano chandelier, for nearly a century, never left the Venetian lagoon where the master artisans had once shaped its form and chosen its color. It illuminated the counter of an apothecary’s shop, where in silence the pharmacist, surrounded by shelves, would wisely blend herbs and natural elements to restore health to those who had lost it, and to preserve it for those who were well. This refined suspension in lattimo glass enriched with specks of gold dust bears the name of Venini, a historic house that, through the collaboration of great architects, played a central role in the revival of glass artistry in the twentieth century. Many designers left their aesthetic imprint on Venini’s production, creating truly unique objects. In the 1930s, the timeless allure of Murano glass became the interpreter of a sophisticated, internationally inspired design. The chandelier presented here belongs to that very period: with its light, luminous shade and delicate decorations, it appeals to the discerning collector. The design is attributed to Tomaso Buzzi, an important and eclectic figure of his time, whose creations are today considered icons of Made in Italy. Dimensions: diameter 32 cm (12.6 in), height 100 cm (39.4 in).
