Thanks to its good size, its unique handcarved design and good condition this alabaster chandelier too will light up both your days and evenings. What makes this particular alabaster plafonnier stand out from those that we have seen and sold over the years, are the stylish and all-handcarved grape bunches and grape leafs that are carved all around the high side. For this unique light to still be in this condition after more than 100 years is not only an ode to the craftsmanship with which this light was handmade, it also shows how former owners have taken great care. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this shade and you could still not get a good idea of the tranquil beauty and class that this chandelier radiates. In real life (or in person) our antiques always have that little bit more and this stunning pendant is no exception. You are going to (again) have to take our word for it. Have you also noticed the rare, layered bronze elements at the suspension points? This striking, three light chandelier will give enough light for a living room or a dining area, because it will easily take 100 watts per socket. Thanks to its extra large size and great condition this alabaster chandelier is one of the best alabaster chandeliers that we have ever seen or sold. This antique and entirely hand-carved alabaster chandelier will light up your days and evenings in a way that no modern fixture ever could. Anyone who has ever seen one in real life knows exactly what we are talking about. For this stunning, four light specimen they clearly used the perfect alabaster rock, because this unique shade comes with numerous and evenly divided black veins. That combined with the whiter veins and patches that have formed in this mineral stone over a period of thousands of years makes it truly special.
We have several interior designer clients who are looking for these largest of alabaster chandeliers and they know that finding one over 25 inches in diameter is like the proverbial needle in the haystack. This not only is one of the largest (in diameter) antique alabaster pendants that we have ever had the pleasure of offering, it also is one of the deepest/highest. However, what takes this rare size chandelier to a level of its own are the scrolling leaf and flower patterns that are deeply and sharply hand carved all around the body. This level of workmanship was rare, even in the early 1900s and since this light would have cost a small fortune in those days, you can rest assure that only the best artisan would have been allowed to do these (exceptional) carvings.
The original rope hanging to this monumental chandelier was 'shot' and we replaced it with bronzed chain that perfectly complements the entire look and feel of this majestic pendant. Combined with the large, original and height adjustable alabaster canopy this rare light can be used and enjoyed in all kinds of interiors and in all kinds of living spaces. For it to still be in this very good condition after more than 100 years is like an ode to the craftsmanship of early 1900 artisans in Europe. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this chandelier in general and the one of a kind, supersize shade in particular. The Arts and Crats movement emerged in the last decades from twentieth century, like a reaction againts the first industrial style that was developed in England. The one called Victorian Style. It is said that those who came to visit the Universal Fair in 1851, arrived to the Crystal Palace from London, and also amazed by the technical advances, were surprised by the bad taste of all that was massive manufacture. So the idea of industrial progress began to mingle with the intuition that a reaction was needed to return the objects of daily life a certain aesthetic dimension, to accompany thenatural functions for which they were manufactured. This reaction was named Art and Crafts, because it pretend to raise social dignity and aesthetics of design and applied arts of all, integrating them into a harmonious and beautiful architectural environment.
