About the Item

A unique antique American Caldwell neoclassical circular chandelier in gilt and patinated bronze, suspended by four chains attached to a ceiling canopy decorated with acanthus relief. The dish-shaped body is designed with a scalloped perimeter, each section projecting outward and finished with applied patinated bronze masks. The structure is balanced by gilt bronze links and fittings that connect the chains, allowing the chandelier to hang evenly from the central canopy. The rim is cast with scrolling acanthus and palmette motifs in repeating panels, alternating with the patinated masks that encircle the body. The underside is elaborately decorated with swirling relief patterns radiating toward a central recessed medallion of deep blue glass, framed by a circular gilt bronze border. The interior is fitted with multiple sockets for electrification, placed around the recessed basin, their gilt fittings blending into the ornamentation. The chains are composed of alternating twisted and plain links, with decorative gilt elements at the points of attachment, complementing the detailed cast ornament of the main body. This chandelier was made by Edward F. Caldwell Co., one of the leading American lighting manufacturers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm became known for elaborate neoclassical lighting fixtures, often combining gilt and patinated surfaces with detailed masks and foliate decoration. Caldwell supplied custom pieces for many prominent institutions and residences, employing advanced casting, gilding, and patina techniques. The use of contrasting metal finishes, decorative masks, and intricate relief on this chandelier is characteristic of the company’s production.
