About the Item

An unusual antique French Moorish-style silvered bronze multi-light chandelier. The chandelier is suspended by three chains composed of alternating plain and ornamented links, converging at a pierced canopy. The central body is rounded and bulbous, decorated in high relief with stylized leaf and palmette motifs arranged in symmetrical panels. At the base, a circular finial with ring attachment extends downward, complementing the overall form. Six scrolling arms project from the upper section of the body, each terminating in a candle socket designed for electrified candles. The arms are pierced and decorated with foliate scrolls and beaded edging, supporting drip pans with serrated edges beneath the candleholders. The sockets are surmounted by foliate collars, echoing the motifs present on the central vessel. The large basin-like form of the chandelier, with its repoussé ornament, forms the core structure around which the arms are evenly distributed. This chandelier was produced in France and reflects Moorish stylistic influence, particularly in its use of geometric foliage patterns and ornamental repoussé work. The combination of silvered bronze, scrolling openwork, and Moorish decorative motifs connects this piece to the 19th-century revivalist tradition, which frequently drew inspiration from Islamic and Near Eastern design.
