About the Item
Beautiful pair of unique stoneware pendants in white and brown glazing handmade in Denmark in the 1960s. Attributed to Søholm Stentøj at the island of Bornholm, Denmark.
The Søholm Pottery on the small island of Bornholm in Denmark was established in 1836 and closed in 1996. They were one of Denmarks finest ceramics workshops. With traditional names such as "Søholm", "Michael Andersen" and "Hjorth's Keramik", Bornholm has managed to place itself heavily on the Danish map within ceramics and handicrafts. Just like Japanese ceramics, Bornholm ceramics are characterized by a very high quality – and has been ever since the early 1800s, when the first ceramics and terracotta factories were established on the island. In many Danish homes today there are still ceramic mugs, plates and other useful and art objects made on Bornholm.
While Hans J. Wegner, Kaare Klint and Finn Juhl led the way for the success of Denmarks dominance at the field of modern furniture production Danish arts and crafts was also flourishing. The most well-known names are probably Silversmith George Jensen, Ceramist Axel Salto and Woodworker Kay Bojesen, but despite Denmark's modest size, there were a multitude of small workshops with arts and crafts that produced high-quality objects to everyday life. Much of it was sold directly from the workshops, but also more established shops such as "Den Permanente" and "Illums Bolighus" in Copenhagen exhibited and sold works from these workshops in the 1940-70s.
