About the Item

A unique, large antique French Empire neoclassical gilt bronze chandelier. The chandelier is composed entirely of gilt bronze and is suspended from a circular ceiling canopy with applied foliate decoration. Heavy chains with pierced foliate links support the main body, which is circular and bowl-shaped with a wide central collar. From this body extend six large curved arms, each issuing outward in a scrolling form and terminating in nozzles modeled as fluted cups with scalloped rims. Each arm is richly decorated with low-relief floral and foliate patterns, as well as leaf castings at its junction with the central bowl. The underside of the bowl features applied acanthus leaves arranged in a radiating design, with a large ribbed drop finial completing the form. The surface throughout is fire-gilded, presenting a consistent gold finish across all elements. The chandelier displays repeated neoclassical motifs, including palmettes, anthemion leaves, and acanthus scrolls, which decorate the rim of the canopy, the arms, and the base of the body. The arms are arranged evenly around the circumference, creating a balanced circular arrangement, each arm holding two lights in stepped tiers. The bobeches are broad and decorated with molded gadroons, emphasizing the elaborate structure.
