About the Item

A spectacular and rare French Neo-Greek gilt and silvered bronze chandelier. The chandelier is constructed in gilt and silvered bronze with a six-arm arrangement, each arm scrolling outward in wide arcs terminating in circular drip pans and candle sockets. The arms are ornamented with alternating circular medallions and rosettes, the gilt bronze forming a continuous band of decoration. The drip pans are silvered and chased with concentric floral motifs, their broad, fluted rims detailed with layered borders. At the center hangs a circular pendant section with applied gilt spheres and foliate patterns, completing the composition at its base. Rising from the central structure are urn-form mounts with elongated gilt spouts and scrolled handles, each seated on silvered drums decorated in relief with processional scenes of figures and horses. The shaft of the chandelier is tall and tapering, alternating between gilt and silvered surfaces worked with geometric diamond patterns and pierced borders. Applied gilt mounts in the form of foliage accent the column, while a wide gilt corona surmounts the structure. The corona is cast with alternating bands of circular medallions and foliate friezes. Supporting the urn-form elements are gilt mounts with long vertical stems, terminating in spouts ornamented with incised foliage, their handles modeled with vine-like scrolls. Each silvered drum is encircled by a frieze in relief depicting horses, riders, and standing figures, presenting a continuous narrative of classical subjects.
