About the Item

Elias Canneman (1933-1970) is the name of a former chief architect of the Dutch National Trust for Historic Buildings. He was trusted with extensive projects after the Second World War, such as the Belfry of Sluis, Walenburg Castle, Duivenvoorde Castle, the New Church and the Markiezenhof. Canneman was also especially sympathetic to the fate of traditional Dutch chandeliers. He provided Brink van Keulen with advice about the yellow casting craft and recommendations regarding maintenance and restoration. Commanding yet refined, the majestic three-tier Canneman 170.2 chandelier modernizes antique opulence with 18 gracefully arching brass arms. At a dramatic 150cm high and 125cm wide, this imposing fixture emulates an ornate 17th century Dutch original down to the intricate hand-detailed metalwork swirling across its solid brass frame. Though designed centuries ago, the Canneman 170.2 is wired for contemporary use, immersing modern spaces in decadent old world lighting. Grand in presence yet timeless in beauty, this striking chandelier blends historic elegance with today’s functionality. Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted. Brink van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.
