About the Item

A pair of Louis XV style candelabras gilt bronze with four cups. Round scalloped base with a central structure made of curves and counter curves, supporting three acanthus shaped arm lights. The top of the central structure has a fourth arm light topped by a a candle cup. The base features beautifully formed curling floral leaf branches which rise to hold the candle cups. Each signed E. Łelievre, French 1856-1945, stamped Suisse Freres foundry mark. Paris late 19th century, after Juste-Aurełe Messonier. Pairs of Louis XV style gilt bronze four-branch candelabras are a hallmark of the 18th-century French Rocaille (Rococo) aesthetic, characterized by its rejection of rigid symmetry in favor of naturalistic, flowing forms. These decorative pieces typically feature "four fires"—three scrolling arms surrounding a central fourth light. Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (1693-1750) was an architect, a goldsmith and a designer, active during Louis XV’s reign and successor of Jean II Bérain at the job of architect-draughtsman of the King’s Chamber and Cabinet. He is one of the most famous representatives of the Rocaille style (French word equivalent of the Rococo or Louis XV style). He is known for his stylized cartouches and candelabra drawings that inspired many artists and goldsmiths. Source : J. A. Meissonnier, Dousieme livre des Oeuvres de J. A.
