About the Item

Space Age floor lamp in steel and Lucite by Duccio Trassinelli for Sormani Nucleo, Italy, 1972. This Italian Space Age floor lamp is conceived as a sculptural floor lamp: a vertical steel structure with two “wings”, one in chromed steel and the other in satin-finished steel. Most lamps from this series were produced entirely in satin steel, so this mixed-surface configuration is much less common and visually very striking in a room. The floor lamp stands on a black satin-lacquered base in good overall condition, providing a clean graphic contrast to the steel wings. Eight Lucite lighting elements are supplied with the lamp; each one attaches to the wings by means of built-in magnets. The result is a Space Age floor lamp that can be reconfigured at will, turning it into a variable light sculpture: the buyer can arrange the Lucite elements at different heights and positions to create changing patterns of light. This sculptural floor lamp carries the original “Sormani Nucleo” label and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued on vintage Sormani letterhead. The design was patented by Duccio Trassinelli of Gruppo A.R.D.I.T.I., a radical Italian collective that explored light as an architectural and sculptural medium decades before contemporary LED and OLED technologies. Luigi Sormani chose to produce this advanced concept in his Nucleo division, which focused on experimental Italian design of the 1960s and 1970s. The model has been included in an important museum exhibition: it was shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in “Radical: Italian Design 1965–1985, The Dennis Freedman Collection” (February 14 – April 26, 2020). This particular example comes from the private collection of the manufacturer’s family, which underlines its direct connection to Sormani’s history. The floor lamp has been professionally recabled with a new transformer to protect the Lucite lighting elements from excessive heat, while preserving the original lighting concept. Original lamp bulbs are included, and an additional set of replacement bulbs will be provided to the buyer. The Space Age floor lamp is configured as a plug-in floor lamp, currently wired for European 220–240 volt mains; a qualified electrician can adapt it to local standards if required. Condition is very good, consistent with age and careful use: the base presents beautifully, the steel wings are still stored in their original 1972 packaging with the protective film intact, and the Lucite elements show only minor signs appropriate to vintage material. Lucite should be cleaned with a soft dry cloth, avoiding solvents and abrasive cleaners.
