About the Item

A monumental ceramic TOTEM floor lamp by Bernard Rooke, England, featuring two blue glass roundels. A beautiful sculptural piece, made up of ceramic elements in natural tones of terracotta and stone, with lots of texture, built over a metal tube. The two round elements are decorated on one side with blue/green glass, and a wheel or seed pod motif on the reverse. Very unusual now to see these lamps with glass decoration. The piece is in original condition, with occasional flaws in line with the making and firing process and some general wear to the ceramic as one would expect from age and use, including an old chip to the top section as shown and minor twisting to the shape. This an early model, with heavy hand-formed elements - later pieces being mould-formed - and is an unusually large variation. Wiring: The original wire has been replaced in recent years: bayonet fitting lamp holder, no plug. You will need to test/rewire prior to install; there is a hole on the right side of the base for the wire. Dimensions (ceramic only): H 107cm x W 21cm at base x D 20cm at base. Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork. Rooke made progressive sculptural work and early pieces were hand-fashioned using coils and blocks. His work is found in private collections as well as museums and galleries around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
