While we don’t know for sure who designed this sculptural lamp around the year 1923, we do know that the designer had a soft spot for mechanics, as the lamp arm can be aligned with a counterweight. It’s also clear to see that the floor lamp was created during the Bauhaus movement. Its playful form and flexible aura are reminiscent of Oskar Schlemmer’s traditional ballet figures and Marianne Brandt’s clear and delicate lamp designs. In his final year as a Bauhaus student in Weimar, Gyula Pap helped out Georg Muche and the construction department by designing a floor lamp for their experimental house, “Am Horn”. The light source is a special design feature in its own right – an exposed incandescent light bulb with a mirrored dome, which had just been invented at the time. The rays of light are channelled downwards, making the light source appear dark. The light is absorbed and refracted by the etched pane of frosted glass in such a way that it appears to float like a shining layer above the thin, nickel-plated metal tube. The G.O. lamp is the revival edition of a model designed for Oluce by Giuseppe Ostuni in the 1960s. A lamp that, in the essence of its design, is extremely current, characterised by a vertical shaft from which a horizontal arm branches off and on which the lampshade is mounted. The arm, thanks to the system of joints, is therefore a sliding element that can be repositioned and oriented depending on specific needs. A family which maintains the style of the original design, like the use of the cylindrical lampshade and the contrast between the materials with which the various elements are made. The revival edition is enhanced by precious details in satin gold, which stand out in contrast with the black nickel – of the arm – and the colours of the base and the lampshade, these last two available in three different colours: black, scarlet, and anodic bronze.
