About the Item

Ettore Sottsass “12731” floor lamp for Arredoluce, brass and plumb, Italy, 1956 The “12731” Floor Lamp, designed by Ettore Sottsass for Arredoluce in 1956, is a striking example of mid-century modernism’s evolution. This lamp features a tubular frame and a conical base and shade. Its enameled aluminum finish, with bold black, white, red, and yellow hand-painted stripes, evokes the aesthetic of early electrical components such as resistors. The design exudes a minimalist, industrial charm, amplified by its uplight function and hidden fastenings, which preserve the integrity of its sleek form. A distinctive detail of this lamp is the symmetrical coned-shaped end and back that define the shape of the piece from the bottom to the top. Although designed in 1956, the “12731” floor lamp serves as an early precursor to the Postmodern Memphis Group, a creative collective he founded later in the 1980s. In the lamp’s hybrid nature, both sculpture and light source Ettore Sottsass captured a revolutionary moment in design history. Its tactile, colorful strokes prefigured the future of design, where art and function no longer stood in opposition. We accurately check the quality of every object.
