About the Item

Fantasma Grande floor lamp designed by Tobia Scarpa for Flos in 1961. This rare early production is in excellent condition, large version, designed by Tobia Scarpa in the early 1960s is an 'icon of interior lighting, the lamp consists of a painted metal frame on which a resin called COCOON was sprayed. It is precisely this material that is the hallmark of the most iconic Flos lamps including the Viscontea by the Castiglioni brothers, the Taraxacum and the Nuvola by Scarpa himself. Son of architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice on January 1, 1935. He graduated in 1957 from the IUAV University of Venice and soon after opened a design studio in Montebelluna (TV) with his future wife Afra Bianchin, his university partner. In 1960 the first collaborations began: Gavina, Cassina, B&B Italia, resulting in some objects that became famous, such as the "Soriana" armchair with which he won the "Compasso d'Oro" or the "Libertà" chair with its unmistakable design also on display at the Louvre. Crucial was the collaboration begun together with the architects Castiglioni designers at Flos, from which came important creations: Fantasma (1962), Biagio (1968), Pierrot (1990) and Papillona (1975). It also won the International Forum Design Hannover Award in 1992. He is chosen, along with his wife and professional partner, as the architect for the first textile headquarters of the Treviso-based clothing company Benetton, but not only that, he will also create the first stores in the Freiburg, Paris and New York locations, as well as for other companies: Unifor, Geox and Sisley among the latest. He also undertakes academic experiences, teaching since 2002 at the Department of Design at the Iuav University of Venice, the same university where he was trained. In 2008, he was awarded the "Compasso d'Oro" lifetime achievement award. The design style of Tobia Scarpa and partner Afra Bianchin embraces a distinctly modern aesthetic, always aiming to combine the old and the new. According to his vision, design represents the art of expressing the secret soul of materials. For all iconic Italian design furniture follow our SECOND YOUTH gallery.
