About the Item

A rare and striking piece of design, the model 1102/D garden light was created by the renowned Italian designer Gino Sarfatti in 1971 and manufactured by Arteluce, one of Italy’s leading lighting companies. This lamp stands as a captivating fusion of art and functionality, embodying Sarfatti’s signature approach to modern design. The frame of the light is constructed from a white, plasticized metal mesh, a material often used in garden furniture due to its durability and unique aesthetic. The mesh frame adds a sculptural quality to the piece, while its open weave allows light to filter through, creating an atmospheric effect when the lamp is in use. The white glass shade is one of the defining features of the design: it has a pronounced curve with a wider top that tapers toward the bottom. This elegant, fluid form is designed to rest effortlessly on the metal frame without the need for permanent fixation, allowing the lamp to maintain its flexible, organic presence. The opaque glass diffuses the light, producing a soft, warm glow that contrasts beautifully with the crisp, structured lines of the mesh frame. This table or small floor lamp stands at the intersection of art and functional lighting, serving not only as a light source but also as a sculptural object that enhances any space. The combination of materials—plasticized metal and opaque glass—creates a harmonious balance of textures and contrasts that feels both contemporary and timeless. The lamp still has its original Arteluce sticker on the inside of the structure, further affirming its authenticity and adding to its historical value As one of the later but rarer pieces in Gino Sarfatti’s extensive body of work, this lamp offers a glimpse into his groundbreaking contributions to modern lighting design. Sarfatti was an influential figure, known for his innovative approach to both the technical and aesthetic aspects of lighting. This particular model, with its subtle curves and dynamic mesh structure, reflects his forward-thinking style and remains a valuable piece for collectors and design enthusiasts alike. The lamp is in good original condition, retaining its original patina on the plastic finish, with only minor signs of wear. Despite some slight losses to the finish, it remains an excellent example of Sarfatti’s mastery in design, embodying both functional elegance and artistic flair.
