About the Item

Elegant minimalist spider' floor lamp designed in 1965 by Joe Colombo (1930-71) for Oluce Italy. This is a rare early production example with '1967' label attached (produced around 1969). This design won the gold medal 'compasso d'oro' design prize in 1967 and is in the permanent design collections of MOMA in New York and the Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam as well as the Milan Triennale, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Kunstmuseum of Düsseldorf and the "Neue Sammlung" Museum in Munich . A true timeless classic. The 'spider' lamp ( applique version) also appeared in the famous 'Italy: the New Domestic landscape' exhibition at MOMA, New York in 1972 The reflector can be pivoted and adjusted up and down the chrome stem via a simple single thumb turn. The 'spider' lamp also featured a new special decorative form 'cornalux' bulb produced by Philips which did not require an enveloping lamp shade because it was silvered on top thereby reflecting the light downwards , the slot in the reflector reveals this elegant decorative form bulb and also allows for cooling so the diffuser does not overheat. The 'spider' lamp was produced in several different forms , floor lamp, table lamp, applique, ceiling lamp and a version with a clamp attachment for securing it to table tops, shelves etc. Literature: 'I COLOMBO', page 182-3 Vittorio Faggone, edition Gabriele Mazzotta, 1995 DOMUS, number 440, July 1966 'Italy- The New Domestic landscape' MOMA,, New York, Emilio Ambasz, 1972 Page 62 illustrated the wall applique version.
