The Emerge side table is a modern organic form made from ancient matai trees (a native timber of New Zealand) that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees from the river and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, has been carbon dated at over 1500 years old. A sculptural shape made from individual pieces of matai wood formed together to make a patch work grain pattern. The Canopy table was inspired by a walk through the New Zealand native forest, looking up to the tree canopy observing the tree trunks and branches. Canopy is a design metaphor of the tree itself. Each leg is a trunk with branches that create their own unique spatial geometry with positive and negative spaces. Moving around the table is a true three-dimensional experience where the legs represent the trunks and branches of the trees, and visually interact just like a canopy in the forest. Canopy is also a testament to the craftsmanship of Mother Nature and the craftsmen at Treology. We wanted the timber to tell its own story and a base that added to the narrative. It’s also functional ensuring it accommodates people to sit around and share the pleasure of family dining. The Canopy Live Edge Slab table is made from rimu, a New Zealand native tree, rescued from a river on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. This sustainable timber, naturally felled by nature, is preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature.
