Monumental Italian floor lamp, hand-carved from solid wood with polychrome and gilt finish, featuring three sculptural dolphins at the base. Mid-20th century.
This impressive Italian floor lamp dates from the mid-20th century and stands as a highly sculptural and decorative object. Entirely hand-carved from solid wood, the lamp features an elegant polychrome and gilt finish with a naturally aged patina that enhances its depth and character.
The substantial triangular base is supported by three finely carved dolphin figures, rendered with detailed scale work, curling tails, and expressive heads. Dolphins have long held symbolic meaning in classical and baroque iconography, associated with protection, prosperity, and maritime power, themes deeply rooted in Italian decorative arts.
The tall column is conceived as an architectural element, incorporating fluted sections, acanthus leaf carvings, and classical moldings reminiscent of baroque altar columns and grand palatial interiors. The soft ivory tones are enriched with muted green and ochre highlights and discreet gilding, resulting in a refined yet powerful visual presence.
