About the Item

A Pair of Palatial and Rare Large Antique Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze and Carved Marble Floor Lamps Depicting Large turtles by E. F. Caldwell. Each lamp is formed with a carved marble base shaped as a turtle supporting an elaborately cast gilt bronze stem. The bases display detailed shell patterns and sculpted limbs, while the upper marble section is adorned with low-relief neoclassical motifs, including wreaths and scrolling ornamentation. Rising from the marble plinth are three twisted gilt bronze rods, bound with decorative collars and acanthus leaves, leading upward to a cluster of foliate candle branches. Each branch terminates in a gilt bronze candle socket modeled with petal-form edges and suspended ball-shaped flower cores drops beneath. The lower section of the bronze stem is enriched with leafy scrolls and floral elements, emphasizing the naturalistic forms characteristic of Caldwell’s neoclassical interpretations. The lamps retain their original gilt finish, showing the intricate casting and refined surface work typical of the firm’s highest-quality production. The turtle bases, rendered in solid marble, balance the composition with their weight and texture, providing both stability and sculptural interest. Edward F. Caldwell Co., established in New York in 1895, was among the most prominent American manufacturers of decorative lighting and bronze furnishings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm supplied lighting and architectural bronzes for important private residences, public buildings, and institutions, including the White House and the New York Public Library. This pair exemplifies Caldwell’s synthesis of classical French design and American craftsmanship, combining cast gilt bronze of exceptional quality with carved marble bases in a highly imaginative form.
