About the Item
A significant pair of tall Hollywood Regency bronze floor lamps. Each of the lamps is constructed in a slender columnar form, each rising from a circular, stepped base supported on small toupie feet. The bases are encircled with applied gilt bronze borders worked in a repeating floral and trellis pattern, while the column shafts are punctuated by gilt foliate mounts at intervals. The stems taper upward to support wide, flaring bowl-shaped tops with gilt rims and gilt bands in a continuous leaf design.
The upper section of each lamp is decorated with gilt bronze masks of rams’ heads projecting outward, set against a cylindrical collar encircled by a patterned band. Above and below these masks, the mounts are completed with beadwork details and foliate forms, executed in gilt bronze. The shafts are straight and plain, with occasional molded gilt details that serve as transitions between the sections. The bowl-shaped upper terminals provide a broad platform, bordered with a gilt edge and decorated beneath with further gilt ornamentation.
These lamps were produced in the Hollywood Regency period, a style that favored bold contrasts of dark patina against gilt bronze embellishments. The strong geometric verticality, combined with applied figural and foliate mounts, is consistent with decorative trends of the era. The materials employed are patinated bronze for the primary structure, with applied gilt bronze for the decorative masks, bands, and mounts. The combination of dark surfaces and gilded highlights typifies the striking contrasts often employed in decorative lighting of this style.

This model of lamp, without pedestal, was invented by the Regency lamp-manufacturer James Smethurst of New Bond Street, whose registered mark of post-1814 has been recorded on period examples. A set of four lamps of identical pattern - although not apparently signed - is in the collection of the Dukes of Devonshire at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.
