About the Item

This striking Mid-Century Modern floor lamp, once a centerpiece of the Shelbourne Hotel lobby on Miami Beach since its 1940 opening, blends historical charm with timeless design. Its towering silhouette and substantial presence, accented by a warm wood finish and cylindrical form, cast a beautiful glow while adding architectural interest to any room. In very good condition with minor scratches, it has been rewired, though it does not have a switch and must be plugged in to function. Perfect for collectors or designers seeking a bold statement piece, this lamp embodies the era’s organic sophistication. Originating from the 1940s with the Shelbourne Hotel’s debut, this lamp reflects the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic with its sleek, sculptural lines. Its design suggests influences from luminaries like Gilbert Rohde and George Nelson, known for innovative lighting, or Scandinavian designer Paavo Tynell, famed for elegant wooden forms. Sourced from a legendary Miami Beach landmark, it carries a rich mid-20th-century legacy, appealing to enthusiasts and interior professionals alike. For precise attribution, a maker’s mark or expert consultation is recommended. ---Dimensions--- Width: 16 in / 40.64 cm Depth: 16 in / 40.64 cm Height: 70 in / 177.8 cm Save for a few minor electrical and veneer repairs this artfully-designed and crafted Art Deco floor lights is in original, vintage condition. The thick-cut Burmese teak veneer does show signs of vintage wear such as nicks, gouges, scratches (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided). With that said the wood is in overall very good original shape and the variegated woodgrains of the teak are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light. After some electrical work the lighting is fit by standard lightbulbs making it convenient and easy to change or modify lighting tone and brightness. The original glass lamp cover is intact and the lamp is free standing. This incredible floor light is functional, structurally solid and ready for a literal lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and natural light video for details on this lamp's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
