About the Item
The superb floor lamp is constructed in gilt bronze and stands on a tripartite black marble base with molded edges. Each corner of the base supports an outward-curving scroll leg terminating in hoof-form feet, the scrolling elements adorned with acanthus leaf accents. Rising from the legs, the central support features a baluster-shaped lower section flanked by two projecting candle arms with foliate sockets, each arm terminating in a ram’s head mount. The candle arms are joined to the central column with scrolling volutes decorated in a leaf pattern, all converging at a circular knop enriched with beading and gadrooning.
The tall, tapering central stem is vertically fluted and decorated with a running leaf pattern, leading to an upper section with a cylindrical black-lacquered body. Around this body are mounted three gilt bronze figural busts of putti, each draped with festooned swags and tassels suspended from ribbon bow mounts. The figures are positioned equidistantly, with the swags forming a continuous decorative band around the upper column. The top section is capped with a flared collar beneath the electrical fitting, which has been later adapted to function as a floor lamp with dual light sockets.
This piece is designed in the Louis XVI style, characterized by its use of classical motifs such as the ram’s heads, ribbon-tied swags, and acanthus ornamentation. The lamp’s structure and decorative vocabulary are consistent with French gilt bronze work from the period, with the combination of figural and foliate elements arranged in a symmetrical, architecturally inspired composition.
