About the Item

Three lamps model 1073/3 in steel, aluminum and cracked metal base, by Gino Sarfatti. Prod. Arteluce, Italy, 1956. Excellent condition. Some abrasion on the chrome stems as expected on a period piece. The electrics are original and have been checked. Gino Sarfatti (1912-1985) was born in Venice on September 16, 1912. The childhood of Gino and his brothers was marked by the economic comfort and cosmopolitan environment of the lagoon city. In 1930, he moved to Genoa to enroll in the faculty of aeronautical engineering. But in the meantime, the political situation deteriorated. In 1935, the "stoppage of ships", caused by the sanctions imposed on Italy by the League of Nations, ruined his father. At the age of 23, Sarfatti was forced to interrupt his studies. He moved to Milan and, in February 1939, founded Arteluce. Arteluce opened a store in Corso Littorio, today Corso Matteotti. In 1943, due to the racial laws and the bombings of Milan, he took refuge with his family in Switzerland. Immediately after the liberation, he returned to Milan and reorganized production. In 1950 he made an important trip to the United States, during his absence he entrusted the artistic direction of Arteluce to Vittoriano Viganò. In 1953, the store was completely renovated by Marco Zanuso and became the center of international attention. In 1954, the models 1063 and 1065 won the "Grand Prix" at the X Triennale and the model 559 won the Compasso d'Oro. The following year the award was renewed with the 1055 model. Large volumes of activity led to spasmodic commitment. Since 1949, retail production has been accompanied by export activities and large-scale projects. The latest are the cruise ships Michelangelo and Raffaello and the "cloud" installation for the Teatro Regio in Turin. At the end of 1973, Sarfatti decided to sell Arteluce to Flos and retired to live in the house in Griante on Lake Como. He died on March 6, 1985.

Space Age Table Lamp in Chromed Metal att. to Gaetano Sciolari (1927-1994)
By Gaetano Sciolari
Located in MOUGINS, FR
Large "Space Age" style table lamp by Gaetano Sciolari in chromed metal. The lamp is on a mirrored chromed metal base, with 6 chromed metal spikes with bronze tops around a central shaft, giving the lamp a very elegant silhouette. It is equipped with its original lampshade (some signs of use - see photos). A typical creation by Sciolari in the 1970s - 1980s, this lamp is in excellent condition with particularly well-preserved chromed walls. The electrification is original and has been revised. Dimensions: Total height 75 cm, height excluding lampshade 44 cm, base diameter 17 cm. Lampshade 37.5 cm by 30 cm in diameter. Gaetano Sciolari (1927 – 1994) is a designer, architect and above all an outstanding businessman, born in Italy in 1927. After graduating from the Faculty of Architecture, the young man returned to his first passion, cinema, and in particular filmmaking. However, after the death of his father in 1949, Sciolari had no choice but to take over the family lighting production business. In just a few years, the designer transformed the company and propelled it onto the international scene. Sciolari was not only a brilliant business leader, he was also a creative, prolific and talented designer. He worked for the great names of design like Stilnovo in Italy in the 1950s, Boulanger and Stilkronen. Throughout his career, he designed beautiful and incredible lighting fixtures like the “Mod A5011” pendant (circa 1950), the “4079” floor lamp (1965) and of course the Cubic chandelier (1970s). His creations are shaped in both shiny and matte metal, multi-lights, evoking futuristic visions of the emerging space age. In the 70s and 80s, his creations are in high demand. The Sciolari editor becomes the 1st Italian seller...
