About the Item
This retro Czech flush mount light dates to the 1960s and was produced in the historic glassmaking regions of former Czechoslovakia. The piece features a small clear moulded glass globe with a distinctive crosshatch pattern, designed to diffuse light gently and cast a softly textured glow when illuminated.
The glass shade is paired with its original black Bakelite base, a material widely favoured in mid-century lighting for its strength, heat resistance, and understated visual presence. The contrast between the richly patterned glass and the matte Bakelite creates a balanced, quietly graphic composition typical of Central European industrial design of the period.
Originally installed in hotels throughout the Plzeň region, the light reflects a functional yet decorative approach to interior lighting, where durability and atmosphere were given equal importance. Suitable for wall or ceiling mounting, it works particularly well in hallways, bathrooms, bars, or more intimate dining spaces where a softer, ambient quality of light is desired.
The glass globe measures approximately 148 mm in diameter. The fixture has been professionally rewired using new CE-certified components, with UL-listed options available for use in the United States.
