About the Item

Finnish designer, Carin Lisa Johansson-Pape, was among the most significant Finnish lighting designers in the second half of the 1900s. She designed furniture for Stockmann from 1937, and from 1942 she designed for the Stockmann owned lighting factory, Orno. She also co-founded the Illuminating Engineering Society of Finland. Lighting from Sweden, Denmark, and Finland is among the most iconic designs of the 20th century, treasured as outstanding achievements of refined form and function. Finnish designers’ powerful abilities as architects are reflected in many of the lighting designs of the era, including this model. It is a stylish representation of mature modernism that the Nordic country has been a master of since the 19th century. Johansson-Pape’s designs were always minimal, straightforward, and highly functional, often times combining materials such as glass, metal and acrylic. This ceiling lamp combines a sleek look with modern elements that results in a design with an equally timeless and contemporary feel. Made from acrylic and paired with a brass element, the fixture is quintessentially mid century modern. In this piece, the acrylic is utilised to construct the lamp’s body, an organic round shape which diverges from the classic symmetrical form to achieve a more natural and relaxed look. This results in a cosy effect as the lamp provides a great ambient glow. The piece is flush mounted, meaning that it is mounted leaving only the body on top of the surface. This focuses all the attention on the peculiar, tapered shape and the brass cap-like element, thus further increasing the aesthetic appeal. As Johansson-Pape once said: "A lamp is not the actual purpose, but more like an instrument. It must fulfil its purpose as a provider of light, but at the same time, it must also satisfy the aesthetic demands. A good light fixture must be simple, and its structure and function must be both neat and correct". There is no better proof of her commitment to this statement than this lamp. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamp has recently been rewired and reconditioned. Minor imperfections on the shade may be present due to age and manufacturing inconsistencies. Dimensions: 31.49 in Ø x 7.28 in H 80 cm Ø x 18.5 cm H
