Arts and Crafts Flush Mount Lighting

ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Top Class, Arts Crafts era Chandelier with an Unique Carved Alabaster Shade
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique alabaster shade with carved grapes bunches & leafs and perfect brass canopy. Thanks to its good size, its unique handcarved design and good condition this alabaster chandelier too will light up both your days and evenings. What makes this particular alabaster plafonnier stand out from those that we have seen and sold over the years, are the stylish and all-handcarved grape bunches and grape leafs that are carved all around the high side. For this unique light to still be in this condition after more than 100 years is not only an ode to the craftsmanship with which this light was handmade, it also shows how former owners have taken great care. We could shoot many more photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this shade and you could still not get a good idea of the tranquil beauty and class that this chandelier radiates. In real life (or in person) our antiques always have that little bit more and this stunning pendant is no exception. You are going to (again) have to take our word for it. Have you also noticed the rare, layered bronze elements at the suspension points? This striking, three light chandelier will give enough light for a living room or a dining area, because it will easily take 100 watts per socket. If you use less wattage then this can also be the perfect antique pendant for an entry hall or a master bedroom. Both with the light on and off its timeless beauty will never go unnoticed. The old brass chain and matching adjustable canopy is like the icing on the cake of this stylish chandelier. It is rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage in the USA as well and thanks to the metal hook inside the canopy, mounting this amazing chandelier can be done in just a few minutes. With perfect packing (in a custom made box) and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days included in our fair price this large antique...

Large Superb Condition All White Glass Flush Mount with Wrought Iron Gallery
Located in Lisse, NL
Antique hand crafted, stylized sunburst design two light flushmount / fixture. This 1920s two-light flush mount has the most serene look and feel and you will hardly ever find a light fixture from the early 1900s era in this good of a condition. Thanks to its matt white, single color art glass shade combined with the serene looking, single color wrought iron frame this light fixture could not be more timeless. Thanks to the matt glass shade and unlike almost all other midcentury glass flush mounts, this unique specimen does not at all reflect any of the surrounding colors or sources of light in the shade. Mind you, our photos were shot with this flush mount very close to a window and as you can see, the matt glass shade remains pure white in all of our photos, giving this fixture its unique, 'tranquil' look and feel. Combined with the handforged in fire, wrought iron gallery around the glass shade this timeless ceiling light will also work perfectly in a contemporary interior. Unfortunately we don't know who the designer is, but judging from the Arts & Crafts design and the quality materials, we feel, this should be by one of the better known European artisans from that era. The combination of this flush mount's large size, single 'color' and its timeless design with the hand crafted wrought iron makes it the perfect fixture to complement an Arts & crafts, an Art Deco or a Mid-Century Modern living room, office, kitchen area or bedroom. With only four screws via which you can safely mount this rare fixture tight to your ceiling, this one of a kind light fixture also is easy to 'install'. Both with the light on and off this handcrafted work of beauty is an absolute joy to look at and it will perfectly balance your living space. So if you are looking for an original and timeless fixture, at the best possible price, then this rare flushmount...

Rare Antique Arts Crafts Alabaster with Embossed Copper 6-Light Pendant
Located in Lisse, NL
Copper and alabaster Arts & Crafts chandelier with original twirled copper 'chain' & original canopy. With early 20th century lighting being one of our specialities, finding this rare and extraordinary pendant more than made our day. The combination of the striking alabaster shade and the uniquely designed patinated copper gallery with embossed organic patterns, make it an absolute joy to own and look at. The good condition alabaster shade comes with a large number of natural veins and patches and they are among the most colorful you ever saw. But what makes this Arts and Crafts pendant truly stand out from anything you ever saw are the four extra 'windows' in the copper frame that each has its own little alabaster bowl shade. And with each of those four shades having its own socket, the light and the form that this creates has an aesthetical beauty that you simply don't find anywhere. This too makes this six-light Arts and Crafts pendant extra special and an absolut joy to own and to look at. The unique and organic design of the pure Arts & Crafts body and its matching large canopy will never fail to impress, also, because of its good overal condition. The original and superb condition, twirled copper down-rods are like the icing on the cake of this unique pendant and this antique light fixture will bring the kind of pure class and beauty that you don't find anymore in this day and age. Thanks to the hook inside the copper canopy, mounting this stylish and rare ceiling lamp is child's play. Mind you, this all handcrafted fixture from the earliest years of the 1900s will arrive rewired to the highest standard (with black wire) for safe and immediate usage in the country where it will go to so it will definitely be ready for you to use and enjoy. Sistema Solare Chandelier, Piattelli Design, Ivory-toned Onyx and Brass, 6-shade
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
Unique chandelier, made from thinly-cut pieces of exquisite ivory-toned translucent onyx. Ideal to be hung over a table, with versatile configurations. Ivory onyx comes from Middle Eastern quarries and has a unique veining. This translucent stone is carefully worked in Italy, and was chosen because of its combination of interesting patterns, high translucency, and the way it makes the light output look warmer. The 6-shade version is ideal to be hung over an oval dining table. Our onyx supplier has worked in many high-end architectural projects, and these same materials have been used at the Armani hotel in Milan. When he was shown the chandelier designs, he rose to the challenge and adapted his tooling to make us perfect round discs. He worked hard to find exactly the right thickness that would keep the depth of the texture. It could not be too thick, otherwise it would lose transparency. And too thin, it would look like it was printed. The result is stunning. The combination of carefully-worked translucent stone and brass works perfectly, and the use of the ingenious Orbitale structure allows the geometry of the chandelier to be played with, and it can be configured in several ways. There is nothing else like this on the market. The Sistema collection uses a clever rotating stem structure and features a shallow drum-shaped shade at the end of each arm. The chandelier arms are designed with two lengths so that each can be staggered at different angles. They work well in any space and suit both regular and low-ceilinged rooms wonderfully. Please see the drawing to get an idea of sizes for the different chandeliers. On the upper side of each disc there is a smaller opening to provide ambient light. Top-quality LEDs with over 80 CRI, meaning that the lighting does not alter the color of food and people. The LEDs are on a 24V direct current feed, so there is no flickering. The arms can be rotated 180 degrees to configure various combinations. As well as two rows of evenly-spaced lights over a dining table, a regular 8-shade star or 4-shade star (see photos) are possible, as well as creative sculptural shapes. The arms can be rotated even when the chandelier is lit. The shades can also be rotated on the arm axis to meet any lighting needs in a living room (paintings, bookshelves etc.). This listing shows the smallest drop. A change of drop is complimentary. Silvio Piattelli copyright and design. Specifications (Note: The Sistema chandelier has glass shades, while Sistema Solare...

Orbitale Brass Chandelier 3 Rotating Balanced Arms, Ivory Black Twin Shades
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
Orbitale 3 arms frame using the twin shade. Thanks to a customer who had the articulated sconces and wanted this version with black and ivory shades. It's a beautiful combination of colors on the shades with the light noisette patina on the brass. I designed this for being placed above a kitchen island where it's at the best of use, having task light and movable arms and shades. It would be great also over a counter, a dining table and a living room. Arms are balanced with a heavy cast brass sphere and are rotating on the stem in an orbital movement. In order to get perfect balancing the sphere is filled with sand to reach the point of no leverage. Shades are in hand spun aluminum, lacquered with ivory powder paint with eggshell semi matte finish. Black is matte as that is the best with brass. Shades are connected to the arm with a pivot joint to give different possibilities of light orientation. Each shade carries two bulbs. The larger carries...

Sistema Chandelier by Piattelli Design, 6-shade
Located in Tavarnelle val di Pesa, Florence
This chandelier uses an ingenious rotating stem structure and features a shallow drum-shaped shade at the end of each arm. The chandelier arms are designed with two lengths so that each can be staggered at different angles. They work well in any space and suit both regular and low-ceilinged rooms wonderfully. This is the medium Sistema chandelier, with 3 arms and 6 shades. Ideal for an oval or long dining table. It works well also over an island. The result is uniform lighting from above the dining table. There is nothing else like this on the market. There are beautiful chandeliers available, but they always tend to give out too much light in the center and too little at either side. Each shade has two LED strips that can be lit separately. In this way you can have either a regular light or a stronger light depending on how you need to use the chandelier. The LEDs are top quality with a CRI of over 80. This ensures that the natural color of food and people can be seen perfectly. See the next to last photo, where there is some fruit and a color chart below the chandelier. The LEDs are on a 24V direct current feed, so there is no flickering. The arms can rotate 180 degrees, for many possible combinations. See the drawing for the two regular positions. The chandelier can also be rotated when it is lit. The shades can be rotated on the arm axis to meet any lighting needs in a living room (paintings, bookshelves etc.). The shades have neutral white glass fixtures. Please see the photos. On the back there is a smaller Lucite opening for giving ambient light. The chandelier has the ingenious brass finishes of the orbitale collection. This listing shows measurements for a dining table and the smallest drop. A change of drop is complimentary. Please see the last image for all sizes and ask for high resolution technical drawings if you need them. Extra Large Antique Flush Mount / Pendant with Stunning Alabaster Shade ca. 1910
Located in Lisse, NL
One of the largest antique alabaster flush mounts from the early 1900s. This rare, almost flat and extra large size alabaster light fixture also is of a beautiful design. The beautiful and polished alabaster shade comes with a layered design which makes this impressive light fixture even more desirable. What makes this antique light extra spectacular are the number of uniquely spread black veins and patches. Both on and off these veins and patches make this shade just perfect and a wonderful sight to see. The original and beautifully colored rope and the mint alabaster canopy atop really take this antique to the next level and you could hardly wish for a more stylish light to grace your living space. This rare antique has two reinforced hairlines. The reinforcements were done on the inside, but they cannot be seen on the outside. It is so good structurally that it even rings like a bell when you strike it. Mind you, this stunning and unique antique flush mount...

The beautiful and polished alabaster shade comes with flower petal like carvings all around the outside and they make this impressive light fixture even more desirable. This large size and striking alabaster pendant is designed in such a way that the two bulbs stay out of sight, no matter from what distance you look at it. What makes this antique light extra spectacular are the number of uniquely spread black veins and patches. Both on and off these veins and patches make this shade just perfect and combined with the beech-wood stem you could hardly wish for a more stylish light to grace your living space. This rare antique has two reinforced hairlines. The reinforcements were done on the inside, but they cannot be seen on the outside. The hairlines themselves can be seen on the outside, but since most alabaster shades have such hairlines anyway they don't stand out in that way. However, since this extra large and stunning shade is not as perfect as we would like, we have dropped the price by about 2000 USD. Mind you, this stunning and unique antique flush mount too is rewired to the highest standard for safe and immediate usage the world over and thanks to the metal hook inside the height adjustable canopy, mounting this flush mount tight to your ceiling is easy too. In our view this large alabaster flush mount...
