About the Item
A unique antique Moroccan Islamic style octagonal form reticulated brass and green gilt decorated glass multi light lantern chandelier of fine detailed embellished with Islamic writing and gilt decorated blown green glass shades.
The lantern is constructed in a tall, tapering hexagonal form, surmounted by a pierced domed crown and suspended from a metal loop. The upper dome is richly decorated with intricate pierced arabesque patterns, forming alternating panels of latticework and medallions containing Arabic inscriptions. Beneath the crown, the body descends in sloping brass panels engraved with further inscriptions in cursive script, bordered with vegetal scrolls and geometric motifs. Small pierced openings in arabesque shapes are arranged in the center of each panel, balancing the dense ornamentation. The surface combines both engraved and openwork techniques, giving the brass a layered and textured appearance.
At the base, seven tubular extensions project downward, each made of brass and overlaid with scrolling green enamel decoration. These elongated elements are tipped with dark green glass finials, providing a contrasting color accent against the gilt surface. A narrow engraved frieze borders the junction between the main body and the projecting tubes, decorated with interlacing arabesque patterns. The underside of the lantern reveals further pierced ornamentation, designed to filter light through both the cut metal and the green glass terminals.
This chandelier follows the traditions of Moroccan Islamic metalwork, where pierced brass and applied glass elements were commonly combined to produce architectural lanterns. The extensive use of Arabic inscriptions, including Qur’anic verses and invocations, aligns with the decorative practice of Islamic lighting objects. The green glass, associated with both decorative and symbolic use in Islamic art, enhances the function of the lantern as an atmospheric source of filtered illumination. Moroccan workshops were known for producing such lanterns for mosques, madrasas, and palatial settings, where they served both functional and ornamental purposes.
