Japan Exquisite Vintage Dragon Lantern Newly Electrified

Japan, a finely detailed old "dragon" lantern with exquisite details- newly electrified with an 8' long plug in cord for your immediate installation. The striking and well proportioned lantern possesses all six of its original bell drops and is fashioned with all its original details: roof kasa , light chamber and attached ornamented base Hibukuro or kiso all with patina and weatherization from appropriate older age. In addition it still posseses an 18 inch suspension chain plus all its original interior washi paper liners. The exterior is a dark green finish. A new 8' cord and plug have recently been installed with a new 4.5 watt bulb. Please notice the finely caste six dragon side panels, its top edge hanging bells ,intricate roof detailing and four supportive feet. Dimensions: 13 inches tall and 10.5 inches diameter Hand cast and ready to go. Hard to find this quality today. Unelectrified new similar examples from Japan sell for almost $700 (PHOTO) History of Yukimi lantern: Yukimi-do-ro or legged lanterns have as a base not a post but from one to six curved legs, and a wide umbrella with a finial either low or absent. Relatively low, they are used exclusively in gardens. The traditional placement is near water, and a three-legged lantern will often have two legs in the water, and one on land but today they enjoy wide spread popularity placed in many different settings and in many different styles of gardens. The umbrella can be round or have from three to eight sides, while the fire box is usually hexagonal. Yukimi denotes water reflection. Lifetime guarantee of authenticity. He personally inspects each antique work of art to ensure its old age, authenticity and quality condition. About Japanese stone lanterns. Japan’s lantern tradition is a concept that was imported from India and has existed in Japanese temples and gardens since the 7th century. Japan’s lantern tradition was originally conceived as entrance lighting and guardians to temples and pagodas and when lit served as an offering to Buddha. Some of the earliest stone lanterns were carved with Buddhist images on the firebox and usually had compartments for an oil lamp or candle. Later on, they became more secular in nature, and their use evolved as functional and decorative elements in traditional Japanese tea gardens where they served as a spiritual source of light for evening tea ceremonies. Often carved from granite stone, today’s vintage survivors serve as fashionable aesthetic elements in modern day Japanese and Asian inspired gardens. Today, during festivals and ceremonies, rice paper is often cut to fit stone lantern windows to increase reflection of candles placed inside them. Soon these paper lenses disappear and for one special evening and event, the glow is surreal.

An elegant pair of Japanese cast and lacquered bronze pagoda lanterns, Taisho Period, circa 1920, Japan. The lanterns a true pair, with mirrored decorations and lantern doors opening in opposite directions. The lanterns of traditional toro form, cast in bronze, and lacquered. Each lantern comprised of three parts - the "roof", the "fire box", and the pedestal. This type of pedestal lantern is called a dai-doro, as opposed to the hanging lantern type, tsuri-doro. The hexagonal roof of the lantern, reminiscent of temples or pagodas, features a wonderful, dense cloud pattern with three heart-shaped cutouts, known as inome, or boar's eye. The roof topped by a hoju, the Buddhist flaming Jewel of Wisdom. Each of the six corners feature a fantastic shachihoko, mythical beasts with the face of a tiger and body of a fish. Bells are suspended from the shachihoko. The globular body of the lantern features four pierced panels with the three leaf hollyhock mon of the Tokugawa clan surrounded by a karakusa pattern of scrolling vines.
