About the Item

A large and exquisite antique French 19th-century ormolu and glass multi-light lantern. The lantern has a cylindrical form with a frame of gilt bronze, enclosing four curved glass panels that create a continuous surround. The frame is detailed with beaded and foliate borders, and its lower edge is finished with spherical ormolu finials. At the top corners of the frame are four acorn-form finials, supporting curved and turned ormolu supports that connect to a central suspension loop. Inside, the lantern contains eight candle-form lights arranged around a central stem. Each light is mounted on a gilt bronze socket decorated with leaf patterns and raised on circular drip pans with radiating foliate designs. These are supported by scrolling arms that converge at the stem, which is vertically fluted and continues upward through the lantern. The drip pans and fittings display chased detailing, consistent across all elements of the light cluster. This lantern is French, dating to the 19th century. Its ormolu mounts are worked with repeated foliate and beaded designs typical of the period, while the acorn finials and fluted uprights are also consistent with neoclassical influences prevalent in French lighting design of the era. The large-scale, multi-light construction and use of both glass and gilt bronze are characteristic of the high-quality lanterns produced in France during this time.
