About the Item
A pair of magnificent and large neoclassical cranberry glass
gilt bronze lantern chandeliers. Each lantern is formed around a large cranberry glass bell-shaped body of deep red tone, suspended by three gilt bronze chains connected to a circular ceiling canopy. The glass is bordered along its rim with a gilt bronze collar enriched with engraved ornament and mounted with a continuous row of suspended cut crystal prisms, each terminating in a faceted point. A second gilt bronze band encircles the base of the glass, supporting an additional ring of faceted crystal pendants, completing the framing of the form with light-catching elements.
Four gilt bronze scrolling arms project from the sides of each lantern, issuing candle-form electric lights. The arms are modeled as stylized winged creatures, their bodies curving outward before supporting the sockets and circular drip pans. The mounts are cast and chased, their surfaces retaining original gilt finish. The lantern’s glass is free-blown, with a flared contour that swells toward the base before tapering into the gilt bronze mount. The deep cranberry color serves as the structural core of the chandelier, providing the vessel into which the mounts are set.
The combination of gilt bronze mounts and colored glass is consistent with the neoclassical revival lighting design of the 19th century. The use of cranberry glass required the incorporation of gold oxide during production, a costly and technically advanced process, resulting in its rich hue. The prisms, cut from clear crystal, were attached to enhance brilliance and refractive qualities when illuminated. These chandeliers align with French neoclassical lighting traditions of the mid to late 1800s, where luxurious colored glass and gilded mounts were paired to produce decorative fixtures for formal interiors.
