About the Item

Pair of gilt and patinated bronze sconces from embellished with winged Victories. Each sconce features four candlestick branches that terminate in lions heads and are intricately sculpted with palmettes, griffons, and masks. The gilt bronze bust of Victory rests on a tapered, patinated bronze panel that is embellished with laurel wreaths and winged torches. Victory’s feet extend from beneath and are standing on a globe. The ornamentation of this piece is rigorously symmetrical and focuses on the symbols associated with the mythical figure of the Roman goddess Victory. During the time of Imperial Rome she had a true following of worshipers, and she became a decorative motif that was representative of the Empire style, circa 1850 Dimension: L 13.4 in, W 6.3 in, H 22.4 in Dimension: L 34 cm, W 16 cm, H 57 cm.
