About the Item

Two pairs (4 lamps) of wall mounted lamps model 17-037, designed by Lisa Johansson-Pape and manufactured by Orno Oy in Finland in the 1960s. Each lamp features a heavily patinated copper metal base with an opaline glass shade. They have kind of a cold and industrial impression, and would be perfect for a brutalist interior for example. All the shades are also original ones with some patina on the glass as well. All lamps are in fair condition, with a nice and heavy vintage patina. All pieces are stamped by the manufacturer "Orno" and model no. Please note that the one lamp with different tone with the lights on is due to the bulb and not the glass shade. Lisa Johansson-Papé (1907-1989) was a Finnish designer best known for her works in lighting. She paid more attention to the function of the lamp firstly, then the design feature secondly. Lisa designed furniture for Stockmann for a number of years, after which she turned her attention to lamps, also at the Stockmann owned company Orno Oy. She won a number of medals for her lighting designs in the Milan Triennials in the 1950s.

Erik Gunnar Asplund, “GA9” Wall Lights for ASEA, Sweden 1940s
By Erik Gunnar Asplund, Lisa Johansson-Pape, Hans Bergström, ASEA
Located in Munster, NRW
With its organically shaped blown glass shade, especially rare in this opaline frosted glass version, the GA9 resembles a floating droplet. Designed by Swedish architect Erik Gunnar Asplund, widely regarded as the godfather of Swedish modernism, this lamp embodies his signature geometric clarity and structural ingenuity. Like his Stockholm City Library, it balances simplicity with innovation. A bent arm holds the glass, while another secures the light source at the luminaire’s center. The black lacquered metal curves organically, contrasting with polygonal backplates—an interplay of geometry and fluidity that defines Asplund’s vision. The large, mushroom-like shades diffuse light in a soft, mesmerizing glow, enhancing the atmosphere beyond mere functionality. Asplund’s influence extended to Scandinavian design icons such as Alvar Aalto, Erik Bryggman...
