About the Item
A rare and exquisitely balanced pair of Scandinavian Modern wall lamps dating from the late 1940s, distinguished by their lyrical silhouette and understated Nordic refinement. Crafted in brass with gently curved arms and completed by elongated opaline-glass shades, these sconces emit a warm, ethereal glow reminiscent of candlelight — soft, atmospheric, and instantly enveloping.
The brass structures display a beautiful historic patina throughout: a quiet constellation of oxidation marks, tiny surface speckles and subtle wear that can only be achieved through decades of careful use. One of the circular wall plates shows a slight, graceful indentation — a small, time-worn gesture that enhances the lamps’ authenticity and vintage charm rather than detracting from it.
The pierced perforations around the conical brass holders are a particularly telling detail. This delicate constellation of ventilation holes evokes the poetic craftsmanship of Paavo Tynell, whose work for Taito and later for various Scandinavian commissions remains synonymous with perforated brass and sculptural Nordic illumination. While attribution cannot be confirmed, these characteristics strongly suggest his influence.
The opaline glass cups are wonderfully elegant — tall, flame-like, and delicately frosted — diffusing light with extraordinary subtlety. When lit, they create a soft halo against the wall, and the brass deepens to a richer, honey-colored glow.
Original wiring has been preserved; rewiring is recommended and available on request.
A refined, atmospheric pair — rare in design, graceful in proportion, and quietly luminous. Perfect for bedrooms, hallways, reading corners or any interior that seeks the poetry of mid-century Scandinavian lighting.
