About the Item
This ceramic wall light, created around 1975 by German artist Walburga Kulz (b. 1931), exemplifies her blend of sculptural design and functional utility. Featuring a rectangular structure with an oval cut-out framing vertical ceramic elements, the piece achieves a striking interplay of form and light. Its earthy glaze adds depth and texture, while clean geometric lines give it a modernist aesthetic. Designed as both a light source and a sculptural object, it transforms spaces into showcases of mid-century design. Kulz, trained as a ceramicist in post-war Germany, is renowned for her exploration of bold geometric forms and refined glazing techniques. This wall light reflects her 1970s experimentation, balancing minimalist design with tactile materiality. Rare and collectible, it is a timeless testament to her mastery and her contribution to modern ceramic art and design.

Walburga Külz
Walburga Külz (* September 22, 1921 in Mittelberg; † October 15, 2002 in Erbach) was a German ceramist. Walburga Külz learned her trade from 1940 to 1944 in the ceramics workshop of Otto Lindig in Dornburg/Saale, for a time she also worked as a volunteer in the porcelain manufactory Fürstenberg. She then studied painting on ceramics with Siegfried Möller at the Nordic Academy of Art in Bremen. After her master's examination, which she passed in Weimar in 1946, she again worked briefly for Otto Lindig. In 1947 she took over the management of the Margaretenhöhe ceramics workshop in Essen. In 1953 she set up her own workshop in Erbach in the Rheingau, where she worked until 1988. From 1968 onwards, she produced mainly non-purpose ceramics and small sculptures. In 1973 she was awarded the Hessian State Prize for German Arts and Crafts. On the occasion of her 80th birthday, an exhibition of her work was held at the Museum of Applied Arts in Gera and then at the Marburg University Museum of Art and Cultural History. Literature
