The new collection by Pedro Ávila, titled Neo-Romance, continues his exploration of the tensions between past and future. The pieces evoke nostalgic forms reimagined through a futuristic lens. Ávila revisits the romantic aesthetic that influenced design from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, when emotion, symbolism drawn from nature, and craftsmanship prevailed over strict functionality. Ornate lines, decorative excess, and an eclectic mix of historical styles shaped a design language driven by sentiment rather than reason.
In Neo-Romance, these principles are reinterpreted in a contemporary context. The forms allude to the romantic spirit without relying on literal references, translating it into a modern visual language. The collection’s name, pronounced the same in Portuguese and English, offers a poetic reflection on the evolving idea of romantic love, while the titles of the pieces blend historical and literary references with subtle irony drawn from contemporary expressions of affection and desire.
