Infinito Viviente, 9th November 2022 - 14th February 2023, Side Gallery, Barcelona.
Side Gallery’s first solo exhibition with the French designer Elissa Lacoste, Infinito Viviente took its title from Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and alludes the vibrant atmosphere of a speculative and immersive underwater landscape that characterised Elissa’s collection. This new body of over 21 functional sculptures for her first solo show unfolds like an expanding never before seen seascape of floating, hovering and grounded elements in an inviting game of pareidolia. Lacoste’s work considers the gathering of materials and their assemblage and interplay as a celebratory act of defying prediction and conjuring mutating synthetic topographies and rebellious biomes within contemporary boundaries. Just as Jules Verne describes the sea, ‘you feel life stirring on all sides, Elissa’s collection evokes to the diversity that was or could be, with materials flowing free from tyranny.
Concept
The Epilith lamps series seeks to evoke the magical sensation that one can feel when seeing a plant flourish on an arid support. Resembling flowering wild thorny plants emerging from unexpected minerals, the lamps speak of our domestic spaces from which nature is tangibly fading. Each lamp is a unique composition of three different synthetic materials shaped by experimental techniques inspired by natural formation of matter. Mineral stratifications, metal nugget formations and semi-translucent wobbly substances, the compositions result from an intuitive approach to creating objects, reimagining a natural yet supernatural growth in a prospective manner by letting matter grow and take form freely.
