A pair French gold gilded bronze Bouilotte Wall Sconces, Empire Revival. With matching cyan blue lampshades with a gold interior. Style: French, Empire, English Mansion, Regency, Hollywood Regency Antique, Vintage, Mid Century Design: Made in the manner of or reminescent Maitland Smith, Thomire, Henredon, Maison Bagues etc Made for 2 Lights E27 socket Heavy lamps very good quality and the gold color is fabulous Height: 22 inches - 56cm Width: 10.2 inches - 26cm Empire is an early 19th century design movement in architecture, furniture, other decorative arts and visual arts. It represents the 2nd phase of neoclassicism. Popular between 1800 and 1815, the period of the Consulate and the First French Empire, although it lasted until the late 1820s. The Empire style originated in France from which it spread to Europe and the United States. The Empire style derives its name from the reign of Emperor Napoleon I in the First French Empire, when it was intended to idealize Napoleon's leadership and the French state. The previous fashionable style in France was the Directoire style, which replaced the neoclassicism of the Louis XVI style with more restrained and minimalist forms. The new Empire style brought a full return to ostentatious wealth. The Origins of the Bouillotte Lamp The Bouillotte lamp takes its name from a popular French card game called Bouillotte that emerged in the eighteenth century. A popular game based on the French game “Brelan” and played at many upper-class gatherings. Similar to the modern game of poker, chips, or counters were used. The French Bouillotte lamp stood at the center of all this action. Placed at the center of a round games table, known as a Bouillotte table and designed specifically for the game. Since those heydays of Bouillotte gaming, the French Bouillotte lamp has become an object of luminary luxury.
