About the Item

French Art Deco Set of Two Double Wall Sconces by Jean Gauthier, Paris, France, 1920s. Elegant set of two French Art Deco double wall sconces by Jean Gauthier, designed in Paris during the 1920s. Each sconce features thick molded opalescent glass shades with a subtle cobalt-blue hue, offering a rich, diffused light characteristic of high-quality Art Deco lighting. The shades are mounted on solid bronze fixtures, whose clean architectural lines provide a refined contrast to the luminous glass. The double-light configuration enhances both functionality and visual balance, making these sconces ideal for flanking architectural elements or defining a decorative wall composition. Materials, Signatures, and Condition Thick molded opalescent (cobalt-blue) glass shades Solid bronze wall mounts Molded signature: “Ezan France 54–60” (see photo) Excellent vintage condition The sconces are delivered wired with B22 sockets for your country (EU, US, UK, China, etc.). LED bulbs may be used. Dimensions Each sconce: Height: 10.8 in. (27.5 cm) Width: 18.5 in. (47 cm) Depth: 8.7 in. (22 cm) Jean Gauthier (active 1910s–1930s) Jean Gauthier was a French glassmaker and lighting designer active in Paris from the years following the First World War through the 1930s. His first workshop was located at 12–14 rue Jean Robert, Paris, a location that later gave rise to one of his early pseudonyms. In the immediate postwar years, Gauthier produced cameo glass shades, some of which were signed simply “Gauthier.” As demand for modern lighting increased during the Art Deco period, he expanded his operations to Ézanville, where new factories were established to specialize in molded and pressed glass production. Many of Gauthier’s Art Deco models were produced unsigned, while others bear marks such as “EJG” (Établissements Jean Gauthier) or “J. Robert,” a pseudonym referencing the street name of his first Paris workshop. In the 1930s, Gauthier introduced a successful line of opalescent semi-crystal glass shades, often in cup form. These later models are sometimes signed “Ezan France,” referencing the Ézanville plant. Today, Jean Gauthier’s lighting is appreciated for its strong Art Deco identity, quality of glasswork, and architectural clarity, and remains sought after by collectors of French interwar design.
