About the Item

1921, before ever becoming a design, the GRAS lamp started out as an idea. It is the first articulated lamp in the history of lighting. Invented specifically as a light for working by, nowadays it fits seamlessly into any domestic environment. Form followed function: this simple dictum is the reason why it has remained timeless and at the same time ‘transparent’: the designer’s ego is absent. The restraint of the form means that it fits perfectly into whatever environment it is placed, looking as good in a traditional apartment as it does in an architect-designed house. For example, a GRAS lamp coupled with an Embryo chair by Mark Newson form a happy couple! Bernard-Albin Gras’ guiding principle never wavered: the user should always have a lamp close by for when he needs it. He should be able to manipulate the light like he manipulates a machine or moves his eyes! (Extract from the 1922 catalogue). It is clear then that the GRAS lamp was designed as a lighting ‘tool’, a precision implement that could be infinitely adjusted but would remain stable. Each model corresponds to a specific use, and even in some cases to a specific profession. You could write reams on the different professions that have adopted GRAS lamps. As early as 1928, Le Corbusier was captivated by their modernism and the GRAS lamp soon found a home among artists and architects, including Robert Mallet-Stevens, Michel Roux-Spitz, Eileen Gray, Brassaï, Sonia Delaunay, Matisse, Picasso... DCW editions has acquired exclusive rights for the range of Lampe Gras and reissues it since 2009.
