About the Item
A large and impressive French ceramic light sculpture signed Maumus and made in Vallauris in the 1970s. Hand-carved in chamotte clay, the sculptural sunburst motif reveals warm amber light through the perforated relief. A striking one of a kind studio piece combining ceramic art and integrated lighting, ideal for high-end interiors.
This exceptional French light sculpture is a large and highly sculptural ceramic artwork created in Vallauris in the 1970s and hand-signed by the studio ceramist Maumus. Made from chamotte ceramic, the piece has a deeply textured, organic surface with a dramatic carved sunburst radiating from the center. The circular perforations and carved openings reveal warm amber light once illuminated, transforming the sculpture into an atmospheric and architectural object.
Vallauris was one of the most important ceramic centers in France during the mid-20th century, known for its experimental studio work and expressive sculptural styles. This piece reflects that tradition with its bold relief, irregular contours, and strong artistic presence. It is entirely hand-made and marked “Maumus – fait main – Vallauris,” confirming its artisanal studio origin.
With its impressive dimensions of 58 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the work has strong decorative impact. It functions both as a sculptural wall piece and as a light source, giving it a unique dual character that suits contemporary, eclectic, Brutalist, wabi-sabi, and organic interiors.
This is a one-of-a-kind studio work, not part of any series, and the craftsmanship is immediately visible in the depth, texture, and hand-cut detail. It is fully functional and ready to install. A powerful and rare statement piece for collectors, architects, and interior designers who appreciate artisanal French ceramics with character and presence.
