About the Item

Monumental French wall sconce in hand-hammered brass (dinanderie), Early 20th century. The design translates a Symbolist thistle/holly motif into sculptural metalwork: layered, repousséd leaves and crimped calyx shades rise along a vertical stem punctuated by domed rivets and a halo of concentric rings. Executed from sheet brass—cut, folded and planished rather than cast—the surfaces retain lively hammering and a warm, honeyed patina that animates the light. The language and construction align with the Parisian metal-arts milieu, where artisanal dinanderie flourished across workshops supplying bespoke lighting and decorative fittings for grand domestic interiors. Attribution: Attributed to the circle of Paul Kiss; in the taste of Émile Robert. While both masters are best known as ferronniers, the present sconce shares their formal vocabulary—architectonic stems, botanical vigor, and ornamental rivets—interpreted here in brass rather than wrought iron. Rare at this scale and presence—decorative yet architectural—ideal as a statement piece in an entry hall, stair landing, or dining room feature wall. Origin/Period: France, Art Nouveau (Symbolist), Early 20th century. Materials: Hand-hammered brass (dinanderie). Sockets: Currently fitted for small screw bulbs. Condition: Good vintage condition; rich patina with minor marks consistent with age and hand-worked construction.
