About the Item

Elegant mid-century Italian double wall sconce crafted in Murano glass during the late 1960s to early 1970s. The sconce features two sculptural glass leaves made by hand in the Murano graniglia technique — a process in which molten glass is rolled in fine frit to create a distinctive crystalline or “sugared” surface texture that shimmers when lit. In this example, the graniglia layer is applied only to the reverse side of each leaf, leaving the front surface perfectly smooth and clear for a refined, luminous effect. The leaves are shaped in deep relief with pronounced ribs and scalloped edges, then secured by decorative brass caps to curved, rope-twist brass arms that rise from a central domed backplate. This combination of clear Murano glass and warm brass epitomizes the elegant Mid-Century Modern craftsmanship of Italy while reflecting the Hollywood Regency taste for glamorous materials and radiant light. Likely produced by one of the major Murano glasshouses such as Barovier Toso or A.V. Mazzega, both renowned for their extensive graniglia lighting lines of this period. Each sconce holds two small-base candle bulbs (E14 or E12). Rewiring for local standards is recommended.
