About the Item

This rare pair of wall lights was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The lights are based on Tynell’s wall light model 9414, here realized as a custom order with two different heights. Executed in brass with wooden slat shades, the design reflects Tynell’s refined approach to material, proportion, and atmosphere. One light measures 160 cm (63 in) in height and the other 120 cm (47.2 in), a variation that strongly suggests a bespoke commission rather than standard serial production. Both lights are adjustable, allowing the direction of light to be altered as needed. The wooden slat shades, with a diameter of 24.5 cm (9.6 in), create a warm, softly filtered glow and introduce a tactile, architectural quality characteristic of Paavo Tynell’s lighting from this period. The 1940s marked a significant phase in Tynell’s work at Taito, when he refined many of his key model families while also producing custom adaptations for specific interiors. Wooden slat shades appear across several of his designs from this era, particularly in works intended to create gentle, atmospheric illumination rather than direct light. Installed as a pair, these wall lights bring a strong vertical rhythm to a space while maintaining a calm and understated presence. Their adjustable construction makes them well suited for reading areas, bedrooms, or living spaces where flexible, ambient lighting is desired. The combination of documented model reference, custom proportions, and careful execution makes this pair especially appealing to collectors of Finnish modernist lighting.
