About the Item

A fine pair of French Belle Époque figural gilt-bronze two-light wall-lights, after Gustave Joseph Chéret (French, 1838-1894) signed: Joseph Chéret, 25 and Stamped: Soleau-Paris. The Art-Nouveau sconces, each depicting a figure of an open arm cherub with holding a pair of candle-lights fitted with later Tiffany style iridescent gold Favrile Lily art glass shades. The base centered with crossed-torches amongst acanthus and grape vines. (Electrified). Circa: Paris, 1900's. The sculptor Gustave-Joseph Chéret (1838-1894) worked in the second half of the 19th century. He was the younger brother of the painter Jules Chéret. From 1887 onwards he was a member of the artistic management of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. He also worked for the ceramist Joseph-Théodore Deck. A cast of the present vase was exhibited at the 1882 Paris Salon. The present model of wall-lights, also edited by Eugene Soleau, were exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. (see A.
