About the Item
This elegant pair of antique bronze dore sconces was crafted in the Louis XV Rococo style in France during the late 19th century, circa 1880. Designed to provide both decorative impact and functional illumination, these sculptural sconces exemplify the exuberant movement and refined ornamentation characteristic of the Rococo period.
Each sconce is expertly cast in solid bronze and features a richly patinated gilt surface. The eight asymmetrical scrolling arms are adorned with deeply modeled acanthus leaves, foliate scrolls, and floral motifs, rising from a sculptural backplate with pierced detailing and a classical leaf-and-flower finial at the base. The sinuous arms terminate in finely shaped candle cups with gadrooned and leaf-form drip pans, offering the option of traditional candle use or conversion for electrical wiring.
The craftsmanship is substantial and confident, with crisp detailing throughout and a weight that reflects the quality of the bronze casting. The gilt surface displays a warm, aged patina consistent with age and use, enhancing the depth and character of the decorative relief. The pair remains in excellent condition commensurate with age, with minor wear appropriate for an antique of this period.
