About the Item

Beautifully hand-hammered using the metalworking technique known as repoussé (where low-relief images are rendered from the verso side), this pair of three-light sconces dates to the 1800s. Formed by a series of volutes and elongated scrolls, the French wall-mounted candle holders have a highly sinuous appearance. Set within these undulating edges is a coat of arms display inside an oval border of beading. The shapely heraldic shield is quartered by a cross, with separate charges of fleur de lys above weaponry. A bird surmounts the crest, while the rest of the oval field is completed by a pair of leafy vines flanking the shield. Additional foliate margents, as well as a mascaron with a fluted surround above and below the coat of arms, expand towards the scrolled extremes of the sconces. The very bottom of the sconce is adorned with a large scalloped leaf, below a protruding demi-lune-shaped bracket that supports three cylindrical candle holders. Some losses to the silver plating have exposed areas of the original copper material, which leave the sconces with a unique color palette of both copper and silver, making them attractive decorative wall elements for a smaller wall space, such as a hallway, bathroom, or kitchen.

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Silvered Bronze Chenets, circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze. Each finial has two pots au feu of different sizes and orientation adorned with a laurel swag. The larger fire pot...
